A shopkeeper on Misguntweg in Saramacca was arrested by police on Monday, September 14, for allegedly selling alcoholic beverages without a valid licence. A large quantity of liquor was seized.
Police from the Groningen station took action after receiving information that alcoholic beverages were being offered for sale in the shop without the required licence.
Officers subsequently conducted an investigation at the business. Large quantities of alcoholic beverages of various brands and in different packaging were found in the shop. According to police, the inspection showed that the shopkeeper did not have the required licence.
The man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of violating the Wet Economische Delicten (Economic Offences Act) and the Wet Beroepen en Bedrijven (Professions and Businesses Act).
After consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), the discovered quantity of alcoholic beverages was seized. Police are continuing the investigation.
