734152359 122331701192011040 6866568757122931023 n A 20-year-old moped rider has died after a collision with two other moped riders on Van Idsingastraat. Two injured people, including one in critical condition, have been admitted to hospital.
The 20-year-old moped rider I.L. died on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from injuries sustained in a collision with two other moped riders on Van Idsingastraat, near Kuldipsingh. The victim died shortly after arriving at the Emergency Department (SEH) of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP).

Preliminary investigations by the Verkeersonderzoek Unit Paramaribo (VOUP) and secured camera footage show that two moped riders, believed to be friends, were riding alongside each other. They were coming from the direction of Dr. Sophie Redmondstraat. At one point, I.L. made an overtaking manoeuvre on the right-hand side, ending up in the lane of oncoming traffic.

This resulted in a collision with an oncoming moped rider. The third moped rider, who was riding alongside I.L., also fell. All three people involved sustained serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to the SEH of the AZP. Shortly after arrival, I.L. succumbed to his injuries.

Oncoming rider in intensive care

The other two moped riders were admitted to hospital for treatment. The third moped rider has since been discharged, while the oncoming moped rider remains in critical condition. According to police, he is unresponsive and is being treated in the intensive care unit.

Police have seized all three mopeds for re-inspection. The deceased victim has since been buried.

Following the accident, police once again urgently appeal to moped riders to comply with traffic rules, adjust their speed and avoid dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.

Police stress that a moment of inattention or taking unnecessary risks in traffic can have serious and even fatal consequences.
