Minister Marinus Bee of Binnenlandse Zaken calls, on the occasion of Marron Day, for unity, mutual respect and shared responsibility for the development of Suriname. According to the minister, the hard-won freedom must be given further substance by building a just society in which every citizen is given opportunities.
In his message of 10 October, Bee pays tribute to the ancestors who fought for freedom, dignity and the preservation of their identity. According to him, Marron Day is marked by remembrance, recognition and pride, but also provides an opportunity to reflect on the future of the country.
The minister stresses that the current generation has the responsibility to build on that struggle. Justice, respect and equal opportunities must be central to this, so that no one is left behind.
According to Bee, the languages, traditions and values of the Marron communities form an indispensable part of the national heritage. In addition, Suriname’s development requires sustained attention to education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment and prospects for young people.
“Let us honour our ancestors by remaining united and jointly taking responsibility for the future,” Bee said.
The minister wishes Surinamese society, and the Marron community in particular, a dignified, meaningful and blessed Marron Day.
