The body of 20-year-old Cuban national P.S. washed ashore on Thursday, August 27, at Misahoi Beach in Klaaskreek, Brokopondo District. The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established.
The police at the Brokopondo station received a report that same day about a body found near the beach. Officers went to the location and determined that the man showed no signs of life.
The local basja of Klaaskreek assisted the police with their work. Other competent authorities were also called in.
Preliminary investigations indicate that P.S. was presumably working on a so-called scalian, a vessel used for gold mining on the water. It is still unclear how he died and how long he had been in the water.
The body was transported to Paramaribo by a funeral home on Friday morning. On the orders of the Public Prosecution Service, the police seized the body for an autopsy.
