The Surinaamse Schaakbond is pleased to announce that GM José Eduardo Martínez Alcántara will visit Suriname on 29 and 30 August 2026 for a special chess programme featuring activities for players of various levels.
The 27-year-old José Eduardo Martínez Alcántara was born in Lima, Peru, and has represented Mexico since 2024. With a FIDE rating of 2644, he is among the very best players in South and Central America and is currently Mexico’s highest-rated player. His highest classical rating was 2667.
Martínez Alcántara achieved major successes at a young age. In 2017, he became world champion in the under-18 youth category, and in 2018 he was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title. In 2025, he also made a strong impression during the FIDE World Cup, where he reached the quarter-finals and eliminated several top players.
His visit to Suriname offers local chess players a unique opportunity to meet him in person. In addition to playing simultaneous exhibitions, GM Martínez Alcántara will share his knowledge and experience during motivational sessions and training.
