A 20-year-old man of Cuban descent died on Thursday afternoon, August 27, during diving operations on a pontoon in the Suriname River. The incident occurred near Klaaskreek, close to Mi Sa Hoi beach.
Police at Brokopondo Centrum received a report that the man had gone missing during the work. Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, L.J., was working as a trainee diver with a colleague on a so-called scalian.
At some point, L.J. fell into the water and did not resurface. A search was launched immediately, after which he was recovered from the water. A doctor pronounced the man dead.
Following an investigation, the body was released to the next of kin. Police in the Central Region are investigating the circumstances under which the accident occurred.
