Police have arrested a 52-year-old Brazilian after two firearms were found in his luggage during a check at the Klaaskreek police post. The man was in a passenger vehicle travelling from Brownsweg to Paramaribo.
The Regio Bijstandsteam Midden (RBTM) acted on information that the suspect, J.C.B., may have been armed. The vehicle he was in was stopped near the Klaaskreek checkpoint. During the inspection, officers found a Baikal hunting rifle and a Browning handgun in his luggage.
The suspect stated that he had bought the firearms in the interior for his personal safety. According to him, he is a gold miner. J.C.B. has been detained pending the investigation. Brownsweg police have been tasked with the further investigation.
