A drainage permit is required to install a culvert. Plot owners must apply for and obtain this permit in advance before the culvert is installed. According to the District Commissioner’s Office, this obligation is regularly ignored.
The district administration warns that measures will be taken in the event of violations. Culverts installed without a permit may, in accordance with applicable legal regulations, be removed. The costs of removal may, insofar as legally permitted, be recovered from the owner. Contractors involved in illegal work also risk measures.
Incorrect installation increases risk of flooding
In addition to the lack of permits, the District Commissioner’s Office draws attention to the technical requirements for the installation of culverts. These include taking account of the prescribed diameter and the required number of drainage basins.
These facilities are necessary to properly discharge rainwater to the designated drainage facilities. When culverts are installed incorrectly or have insufficient drainage capacity, water flow may be obstructed. This increases the risk of flooding, especially during heavy rainfall.
Additional inspections on weekends
Because it has been established that culverts are also being installed without permits on weekends, the District Commissioner’s Office will intensify supervision and inspection activities on those days. Where necessary, OWRO will be called in to address violations on site.
The District Commissioner’s Office of Wanica Centrum calls on plot owners and contractors to comply with permit conditions and technical requirements. According to the district administration, proper installation of culverts and drainage facilities is of great importance to ensure good water drainage and limit flooding in residential areas.
