A 40-year-old domestic worker, P.L., has been detained by police on suspicion of stealing a large sum of money from her employer’s home. According to police, the woman confessed during questioning to taking money and spending part of it on purchases and casino visits.
The woman worked for a family that runs a heavy equipment company. The theft is said to have taken place while the family was on holiday abroad. At the time, only an elderly family member was present in the home.
According to the preliminary police investigation, P.L. allegedly took a key at unguarded moments to a room where she knew the family kept money. She then allegedly removed money from that room on several occasions.
After the family returned, irregularities were discovered in a bag in which the money was kept. There were no signs of forced entry. An inspection showed that amounts had disappeared from several bundles of money, while the original wrapping of the bundles had remained intact.
According to police, the female head of the household knew how the money had been wrapped and, after counting it, determined that approximately EUR 15,000 and USD 5,000 were missing in total.
Because, according to the investigation, P.L. was the only outsider who had access to the home during the family’s absence, she came under suspicion.
During questioning by detectives, the woman allegedly confessed to the theft. She stated that she had spent a large part of the money on various purchases and visits to casinos.
EUR 7,000 and USD 3,700 were later found on the suspect. The money was seized by police.
Following consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), P.L. was detained. The Afdeling Recherche Regio Midden (Central Region Detective Division) is continuing the investigation.
