ecd The Economische Controle Dienst (Economic Control Service) found irregularities involving business permits during inspections in Paramaribo and is investigating complaints about an excessively high exchange rate at an electronics shop on Leysweg.

The Economische Controle Dienst (ECD) has found irregularities concerning business licences during inspections at several companies in Paramaribo.

In addition, an electronics store on Leysweg is being investigated following complaints about the use of an excessively high exchange rate. The inspections took place from 12 to 14 October 2026 and were carried out in response to complaints from the public.

At N.G. Electronics on Leysweg, the person in charge was unable to produce a valid business licence during the inspection. According to those present, the licence holder was outside Paramaribo at the time. The ECD subsequently issued a summons letter, ordering the entrepreneur to report to the service’s office the following day with the required documents.

The inspectors also pointed out to the entrepreneur the obligation to clearly display the daily exchange rate used at the cash register. This followed complaints from consumers that the electronics store was applying a higher exchange rate.

Entrepreneur fails to respond to summons

According to the ECD, the licence holder did not respond to the summons to report. A follow-up inspection found the shop closed. Attempts to contact the owner by telephone were also unsuccessful. The ECD has stated that it will continue its investigation into the business.

Factory previously closed over hygiene and safety issues

Deficiencies were also found at a factory on Beekhuizenweg. During the inspection, the person in charge was unable to present a valid licence.

The investigation further showed that the factory had previously been closed by the administrative service due to deficiencies in hygiene and safety. These first had to be remedied.

The ECD also issued a summons letter to those responsible for this factory. They were required to report to the service’s office the following day with the required licence.

ECD calls on entrepreneurs to comply with regulations

The Ministry of Economische Zaken, Ondernemerschap en Technologische Innovatie (EZOTI) emphasises that entrepreneurs are required to be able to present a valid business licence or a copy thereof during inspections.

The ministry calls on shopkeepers and other entrepreneurs to give their full cooperation to ECD inspectors and comply with the applicable laws and regulations.

At the same time, consumers are encouraged to report suspected price gouging, the use of incorrect exchange rates and smuggling activities.
