The Economische Controledienst (EVD) of the Ministry of Economische Zaken, Ondernemerschap en Technologische Innovatie (EZOTI) has hired more staff to carry out inspections at shops nationwide. EZOTI Minister Andrew Baasaron said this in an interview with KeyNews. The minister said that, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Security, a number of BAVP officers have been trained.
“The Surinamese public should know that we are active in the city, Paramaribo, Wanica and surrounding areas, but we are also tackling the work in the districts somewhat more energetically than in the past,” the minister said.
In addition to the training, the department is currently also arranging office facilities and transport so that staff can travel easily and quickly to the areas. “The ECD is quite busy. We visit the shops, but there are also always complaints coming in,” the minister said.
According to Baararon, these often concern violations such as unclear receipts, receipts in a foreign language and receipts missing important information. “When complaints come in, we immediately send the ECD out to call the shopkeeper to order and ask them to make corrections.”
