A house and a vehicle body repair and spray-painting facility on Goton Royongweg in Wanica were completely destroyed by fire. Nineteen vehicles, two three-wheelers and a motorcycle also went up in flames. No one was injured.
The police received a report of the fire at around 1 p.m. Upon arrival, both the house and the spray-painting facility were fully ablaze.
Preliminary police investigations show that the father of the owner of the spray-painting facility was burning rubbish in the backyard. At some point, the fire spread to a coconut tree and subsequently spread to the house and the nearby spray-painting facility.
The fire brigade was called in and carried out the firefighting operations.
A total of 25 vehicles were on the premises and in the garage. Of these, nineteen were completely destroyed by the fire. Six other vehicles sustained scorch damage. Two three-wheelers and a motorcycle were also completely lost.
Eleven people were staying in the house. They managed to get to safety in time. There were no personal injuries. The house was not insured against fire.
The police in Lelydorp are continuing their investigation into the case.
