Traditional dishes, pangis, dance, cosmetics and agricultural products will take centre stage at the first Maroon Legacy Wi Rutu fair. The event will be held on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October at Roeli’s Event Venue in Magenta. Admission is free.
The fair is part of Maroon Legacy Month, which runs from 18 September to 10 October. According to committee chair Minanga Hertsberg, the Ministry of Regional Development (RO) aims to use the fair to draw attention to the history and culture of Maroon communities. At the same time, entrepreneurs will be given a platform for their products and services.
A total of 65 exhibitors have already registered. Although Maroon culture is central, entrepreneurs from across Suriname can participate, Hertsberg said. Registration remains open until Saturday 26 September via +597 854 1968.
In addition to product sales, attention will be paid to differences in traditions among Maroon communities. Visitors can learn about, among other things, traditional clothing, food, cosmetics, dance and agricultural products. Workshops are also on the programme, including awassadans for children, cocktail-making, fruit cake preparation and the safe processing of fruit into pulp and juice. Entrepreneurs will be recognised during an award ceremony.
RO Minister Miquella Huur wants the fair to grow into an annual event, in cooperation with other ministries and partners. According to her, Maroon Legacy should offer space not only for culture and tradition, but also for sustainable projects, entrepreneurship and training.
Maroon Legacy Month will conclude on Saturday 10 October with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument on Plein van 10 Oktober, marking the Day of the Marrons.
