Fraser sounded out Chery for Suriname
Henk Fraser has made an attempt to make Tjaronn Chery available again for Suriname. The national coach spoke with NEC’s 38-year-old captain, but the attacking midfielder kept the door closed.
Chery had previously retired as a Suriname international, but made a comeback last year with the aim of qualifying for the World Cup in Canada, the United States and Mexico. When Suriname was eliminated by Bolivia in the play-offs, Chery brought his international career to an end.
Fraser, who took over as national coach from Henk ten Cate, nevertheless tried to persuade Chery. ‘He still called me, because he really wanted to have me involved,’ Chery said after NEC-Go Ahead Eagles.
‘I spoke with him last week, but important weeks are coming up with NEC. For me, it is important to be here, so I want to focus on staying fit and doing everything for NEC.’ So the door is not even slightly ajar. ‘No, I am done.’
The international break comes at the right time for NEC after tough weeks with two matches a week on a regular basis. ‘Some of the guys are going to play great matches with their country. We are off for a while now and it is important to clear our heads. To do something with family or friends and relax. After that, we will come back refreshed, go on a training camp and I have every confidence that things will work out.’
