CARICOM countries can better defend their interests on the international stage when they act jointly and with one clear voice. Minister Melvin Bouva of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation (BIS) emphasised this in New York on Monday, September 21.
Bouva spoke as chair of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) during the council’s 26th Special Meeting. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to Bouva, increasing international tensions and uncertainties are making cooperation among Caribbean countries increasingly important. He said the COFCOR meeting provides member states with the opportunity to discuss current international developments and coordinate joint positions.
“As small and vulnerable states, we can better represent our interests when we cooperate, speak clearly and in unity, and make good use of our collective voice,” Bouva said.
One of the items on the agenda was the situation in Haiti. CARICOM remains committed to a process led by Haitians themselves and aimed at contributing to sustainable solutions for the country’s political and security situation. Restoring security and stability remains an important focus in this regard.
International candidacies were also discussed during the meeting. The CARICOM countries reaffirmed their support for Guyanese diplomat Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
In addition, a meeting with India’s Minister of Foreign Affairs is scheduled in New York. During that meeting, the CARICOM countries intend to further strengthen their existing relationship with India and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
Within CARICOM, COFCOR is responsible for coordinating the foreign policy of member states and aligning joint positions on regional and international issues.
