The Kapitale Delicten department of the Korps Politie Suriname (KPS) on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, again arrested two suspects in the criminal investigation into the theft of eleven cylinders containing mercury. Those arrested include a police officer who was responsible for managing the storage facility where the mercury was kept.
It concerns police officer J.B., who holds the rank of sub-inspector and works at the Fraude department. According to information from the KPS, he was responsible for managing the warehouse, in this case a container, in which the eleven cylinders containing mercury were stored.
The second suspect is the man M.S. According to the police, the ongoing investigation has given rise to the suspicion that he is involved, among other things, in the trade in mercury. He is also suspected of involvement in the trade in illegal firearms.
Both suspects were remanded in custody after consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service). The Kapitale Delicten department is continuing the criminal investigation into the disappearance of the mercury. The KPS has indicated that further information will be provided as soon as the investigation permits.
With the arrest of another two suspects, the number of persons apprehended in the investigation into the theft of eleven cylinders of mercury has risen to nine. They now include four police officers. The latest suspects are sub-inspector J.B. of the Fraude department and M.S., who, according to the police, is suspected, among other things, of trading in mercury and illegal weapons.
