58df9822 6700 45f8 987b 6c9b91bc0636 Guyana wins the Inter-Guyanese Games 2026 with 475 points, followed by French Guiana and host country Suriname. The sporting event promotes regional cooperation and talent development among young people.

Guyana has won the Inter-Guyanese Games (IGS) 2026. With a total score of 475 points, the western neighbour finished at the top of the final standings, followed by French Guiana with 444 points. Host country Suriname had to settle for third place with 431 points. The three-day sporting event was officially concluded on Sunday, October 25, at the Anthony Nesty Sporthal.

Suriname hosted the annual sports tournament this year, in which school-going youth from Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana participate. The games began on Friday, October 23, under the motto ‘Building Nation Through School Sport’.

For three days, the young athletes competed for top honours in various disciplines, including athletics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, chess and indoor football. A notable feature of this edition was the introduction of boxing and judo as new sporting events. This further expanded the sports programme and gave young talents in these disciplines the opportunity to present themselves at international level.

Guyana convinces in final standings

After three days of sporting competition, Guyana secured first place with 475 points. French Guiana followed in second place with 444 points, while Suriname concluded the tournament with 431 points.

The difference between the three participating countries remained relatively small. The eventual gap between winner Guyana and host country Suriname was 44 points.

More than just sport

The Inter-Guyanese Games are not solely about sporting achievements. The event also aims to strengthen mutual ties between the three Guyanas and provide young people with the opportunity to gain international experience.

In addition to the competitions, participants are given the opportunity to become acquainted with each other’s culture and build new friendships. Talent development, discipline, self-confidence and mutual respect are also central.

During the opening ceremony, the importance of school sports as a means of personal development and regional cooperation was emphasised.

French Guiana to organise next edition

The Inter-Guyanese Games 2026 came to an end with the official prize-giving ceremony on Sunday evening. The organisation will be taken over next year by French Guiana, which will host the 2027 edition. This will continue the annual sporting meeting between young people from the three Guyanas.
