Israel Election Results 2026: Political Deadlock Looms After Closely Contested Vote

The final election result in Israel has produced no clear winner. Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his main political opponent Gadi Eisenkot has sufficient parliamentary support to form a government independently. The Arab parties therefore hold an important position.

The elections in Israel on Tuesday, 27 October 2026 have led to a political impasse. According to results announced on Friday, the political bloc of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won 53 seats in parliament, while the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot secured 48 seats. The Arab parties jointly hold 19 seats and can therefore play a decisive role in the formation of a new government.

There are 120 seats in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset (Israel’s parliament). At least 61 seats are needed for a parliamentary majority. Neither of the two main political blocs has reached that threshold. Complicated negotiations over the future composition of the government are therefore expected to begin. The elections were the first national vote since the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 and the subsequent wars and military confrontations in the Middle East. The outcome is therefore being closely watched not only in Israel, but also by governments and international organisations involved in diplomatic developments in the region.

Israeli election result shows divided parliament

Netanyahu’s Likud party remains the largest individual party with 27 seats. Eisenkot’s Yashar party won 21 seats. Other parties, including B’Yachad, Shas, Democraten and various religious and nationalist parties, will also help determine how the balance of power develops further.

According to the Israeli election commission, turnout was 77.9 percent. More than 5.7 million votes were cast in total. The high turnout underscores the major political importance of the elections, but did not result in the clear majority both camps had hoped for.

Arab parties could prove decisive

A notable development is the joint gains made by parties that mainly receive support from Palestinian citizens of Israel. Together, they occupy 19 seats, a historically high number. Their parliamentary representation could be decisive in determining who can form the next government.

Eisenkot has so far indicated that he does not want to form a coalition government with the two main Arab lists. At the same time, a minority government supported externally by these parties could offer a possible way out. Such an arrangement is politically sensitive, especially among right-wing parties within the opposition camp.

The elections have produced a winner in terms of seat numbers, but not yet a winner able to govern.

Netanyahu under fire over allegations

The election result has also led to allegations of possible irregularities. Netanyahu and representatives of his Likud party have raised questions about the major electoral gains of Arab parties. Allegations have been made of possible electoral fraud and foreign interference.

No convincing evidence has so far been made public for these broad allegations. Israeli electoral authorities have stated that there is no basis for the claim that the integrity of the elections has been systematically undermined. Any individual reports of irregularities can, however, be investigated.

The Arab political representatives have rejected the allegations. According to them, the debate over possible fraud threatens to undermine confidence in the democratic participation of Arab citizens. Criticism is also being voiced within the opposition over the way the election result is being called into question.

Netanyahu remains Israel’s prime minister for now

Despite the lack of a majority, Netanyahu will remain prime minister for the time being until a new government has been formed. The coming weeks will focus on talks between parties with differing views on security, the Palestinian issue, religion and the structure of the Israeli state.

President Isaac Herzog plays an important constitutional role. After receiving the official results, he will consult political representatives and determine which candidate will be given the mandate to form a government. It is not only the largest party that counts, but above all which candidate can gather sufficient parliamentary support.

New elections remain possible

One possibility is that Netanyahu will try to form a broader coalition with parties that currently belong to the opposition. This would require political opponents to be willing to bridge existing differences. Such cooperation could affect the influence of the most right-wing parties within his current political camp.

Eisenkot will also have to examine whether enough parties are willing to support an alternative cabinet. If both attempts fail, Israel could again face elections. The country has experienced periods of political instability and difficult coalition-building more frequently over the past decade.

Political uncertainty also affects international relations

Political developments in Israel are relevant to countries outside the Middle East, including Suriname. The composition of a new Israeli government could influence policy towards Gaza, the West Bank and other regional conflict areas. International diplomacy and positions within the United Nations may also be affected as a result.

For Suriname, which participates in international discussions on peace, human rights and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israel’s political direction remains an important issue to follow. More international reporting can be found via Key News Suriname.

According to Reuters, the negotiations could take weeks. The newly elected Knesset is expected to be installed on 10 November. The final election results will be presented to President Herzog on 4 November, after which it should become clearer which parties are actually willing to work together.

The key question remains whether Netanyahu can remain in power despite losing his parliamentary majority, or whether Eisenkot can gather sufficient support for a different government. The position of the Arab parties could ultimately prove decisive in that decision.
