DSC06138 LVV has trained farmers and schools in greenhouse cultivation and hydroponics to improve the yield and efficiency of vegetable cultivation under the SUL 1020 ‘Protected Agriculture’ project.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) on Wednesday, October 14, concluded a two-day training course on vegetable cultivation in greenhouses and hydroponics. Participants included representatives of agricultural cooperatives, schools and ministry nurseries that had previously received a greenhouse through a project financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The training is part of project SUL 1020, ‘Protected Agriculture’, which is intended to promote the application of protected cultivation methods in Suriname. Through the transfer of knowledge, LVV aims to ensure that recipients can make better use of the greenhouses provided.

The training covered both the theoretical principles and the practical application of greenhouse cultivation and hydroponics. In hydroponics, crops are grown without soil, using water containing nutrients. In LVV’s greenhouses, participants practised this method as well as cultivation in open ground.

Attention was also paid to recognising plant diseases, pests and nutrient deficiencies. Participants learned how to identify problems at an early stage and what measures they can take to limit damage to their crops.

Rayen Toekoen, director of Agricultural Research, Marketing and Processing, pointed to the challenges facing the agricultural sector, including climate change and the need for more efficient food production. According to him, greenhouses and hydroponics can contribute to higher yields, better product quality and more efficient use of water and fertilisers.

Deputy Director of Agricultural Research Maitrie Jagroep stressed the importance of guidance for farmers and other stakeholders who already have a greenhouse. According to her, the training is in line with LVV’s efforts to make Suriname’s agricultural sector more future-proof.

Participant Waldie Tuinfort, who grows bell peppers in a greenhouse, said he had gained new insights into modern cultivation techniques and the management of crop problems. He particularly appreciated the practical and interactive approach of the training. The participants received a certificate upon completion.
