vgerkeerslicht 1 1536x1024 1 A new pedestrian light at the Lyceum school complex on Copenamestraat improves safety for pupils and other pedestrians in this busy school environment.

The new pedestrian traffic light on Jagernath Lachmonstraat, near the Lyceum school complex, has officially been put into operation.

The installation is intended primarily to help schoolchildren and other pedestrians cross the busy street more safely. The traffic light was realised under the Indian government’s Quick Impact Project. Through the project, India and Suriname aim to improve road safety around the school complex.

Ajay Soekhradj, acting head of the Traffic Monitoring and Digital Technology department at the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO), described the installation as a concrete contribution to the protection of vulnerable road users. He stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility. Motorists and other road users were called upon to drive with extra caution in school zones and comply with traffic regulations.

Indian Ambassador Subhash P. Gupta expressed his appreciation for the cooperation between India and Suriname. According to him, the Quick Impact Projects have provided various facilities for Surinamese society in recent years. India intends to continue this cooperation, the ambassador said.

OWRO Minister Stephen Tsang pointed to the importance of a safe crossing for the many pupils and other pedestrians who use Jagernath Lachmonstraat daily. Several schools are located in the area. Tsang expects traffic pressure to increase further as a result of economic development in Suriname. Investments in modern and safe traffic infrastructure therefore remain necessary, he said.

The commissioning was marked by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Tsang and Gupta. The operation of the pedestrian traffic light was then demonstrated.
