WhatsApp Image 2026 09 17 at 09.20.54 1 The women of Belangen Behartigen Compagniekreek are increasing their podosiri production thanks to a new machine from the Directoraat Agrarische Ontwikkeling Binnenland, which improves processing and marketing.

The women’s organisation Belangen Behartigen Compagniekreek (BBC) has received a podosiri processing machine and additional processing equipment from the Directoraat Agrarische Ontwikkeling Binnenland (DAOB, Directorate for Agricultural Development in the Interior). The equipment is intended to increase production and further professionalise the commercial processing of podosiri.

BBC consists of 13 members who, in addition to podosiri, grow and process upland rice and cassava. Until recently, podosiri was largely processed manually and in the traditional way. As a result, production remained limited and the work generated little profit.

The new machine is intended to enable the women to process larger quantities. The equipment should also contribute to better product presentation and broader sales opportunities. According to DAOB, this will allow small-scale farmers and processors to benefit more from available market opportunities.

DAOB director Hermien Pavion announced that the women will receive training on storing podosiri during periods of scarcity. Particular attention will be paid to maintaining quality. An employee of the directorate will regularly check whether the machine is being used and maintained carefully.

Deputy director of Agriculture Cyrano Asoiti pointed out that the arrival of the machine also offers opportunities for other residents of Compagniekreek to plant podosiri. BBC chair Kentie Vernanda expressed appreciation for the support and assured that the women will use the equipment responsibly.

The operation of the machine was demonstrated by Belfon Aboikoni of Mione Las- en Constructiebedrijf. The company will also provide aftercare. Asoiti and Vernanda additionally signed a report recording the agreements and conditions of use.

According to the Ministry of Regional Development, the project is the first step in cooperation between DAOB and the Compagniekreek community. Both parties intend to further expand this cooperation in the future.
