The Korps Politie Suriname (KPS, Suriname Police Force) has ordered all persons staying without permission in the Masonic area in Sipaliwini to completely vacate the area no later than Friday, 23 October 2026, at 8 a.m. If this summons is not complied with, the police, in cooperation with the Nationaal Leger (National Army), may proceed with a forced eviction.
The order was issued on 15 October 2026 by the Korps Politie Suriname, Regio Midden. According to the police, the Masonic area forms part of unallocated state land of the Republic of Suriname. Persons who have settled in the area without permission must therefore end their stay.
Those concerned have been ordered to completely dismantle their camps and other places of residence. In addition, they must take all their materials, belongings and personal property with them. After the expiry of the specified deadline, they may not again settle in or stay in the area without the required permission.
Police threaten forced eviction
The KPS warns that measures will follow if persons refuse to leave the area voluntarily or comply with the order only partially. In that case, the police, in cooperation with the Nationaal Leger and with due observance of the applicable legal provisions, may proceed to evacuate the area. The police emphasise that the order serves as a formal notification which, according to the force, is legally valid and binding.
