More than 135 pupils of the O.S. S.H. Kisoensinghschool in Clarapolder, Nickerie, are still unable to attend school because the renovation of the school building has not been completed. Classes have also not yet started at the Daniël IJveraarschool in Klaaskreek. According to DNA member Tashana Lösche, staff housing for teachers is lacking there.
DNA member Rabin Parmessar on Thursday called attention in De Nationale Assemblée (Suriname’s parliament) to the situation in Clarapolder. According to him, it remains unclear to the pupils when they will be able to attend school. “The school is being renovated, but no one can say when the renovations will be completed,” he stated.
Parmessar urged that the contractor be given a clear deadline to complete the work. He believes the work must be completed as soon as possible. “If this contractor cannot handle the work, another contractor must be brought in.”
Lösche called attention to the Daniël IJveraarschool in Klaaskreek. According to her, the teachers there are unable to provide lessons because they do not have staff housing. As a result, education at the school has not yet started.
She called on the government to quickly find a solution so that the pupils can still begin with the new school year.
