Residents of the village of Tibitibrug have barricaded the road in protest over its poor condition, which has prevented the school bus from operating. According to the residents, their children have been unable to attend school over the past week. Through the action, they want to compel repairs to the road so that school transport can resume.
The residents are seriously concerned about the consequences of the poor road connection for their children’s education. Because the school bus cannot safely travel the route, the pupils are forced to stay at home. According to the community, there was still no solution in sight at the start of the new school week on Monday, 2 November.
Jopoto Lydia Uralime of Tibitibrug expressed her dissatisfaction with the situation. According to her, it is unacceptable that the children are being deprived of education while heavy transport continues to use the same road.
“While the children have to stay home and miss their education, the trucks continue to travel on the road. There appears to be no attention to the consequences of this for the children and the community,” Uralime said.
Residents demand repair of the road
With the barricade, the residents want to draw attention to the poor infrastructure and its consequences for the community. They believe that their children’s education must no longer be jeopardised by the lack of road maintenance.
The protesters have announced that they will maintain the barricade until the road is repaired and the school bus can travel safely again.
The residents emphasise that their children have a right to education and that a safe, passable road is a necessary condition for safeguarding this right.
The information provided does not indicate whether the responsible authorities have since responded to the action or when repair work will begin.
