Six men, including four Brazilians and two Surinamese, were arrested at Grasalco’s main gate on Monday morning after security personnel found several firearms in their vehicle during an inspection. One of the suspects is also linked to an earlier robbery in the interior.
The suspects were in a blue-painted Toyota Surf when they were stopped by security personnel at Grasalco’s main gate. During the inspection, weapons were spotted in the vehicle, after which the police were called in.
Members of the Regio Bijstandsteam Midden (RBTM) and the Recherche Regio Midden (RRMS) subsequently went to the scene. Further investigation of the vehicle led to the discovery of a shotgun, a homemade machine gun and a handgun.
In addition, police found a quantity of shotgun cartridges, gloves and masks. The items found were seized.
Suspect tried to flee
After the weapons were discovered, one of the six men tried to flee. However, he was arrested shortly afterwards.
Another suspect, with the initials S.D., was positively identified by police as a suspect in an earlier robbery case in the interior. Another suspect in that case had previously been arrested and remanded in custody.
All six suspects were remanded in custody after consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service).
The Recherche Regio Midden is handling the further investigation. Police do not rule out that more arrests will follow as part of the investigation.
