The Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture has allocated SRD 15 million for the renovation of 58 schools. This was announced by Minister Dirk Currie of Education, Science, and Culture on Friday during the budget debate.
The minister further stated that with support from the private sector, fourteen additional classrooms will be built at the following schools: Havo 4, Openbare school Koewarasan, Mulo Schotelweg, Anton Leeuwin school, and Scholen Gemeenschap Kwatta.
Furthermore, the Caribbean Development Bank will finance the construction of 24 classrooms across six schools. The tendering process is currently underway, and construction will begin this year. The schools involved are: OS 2 Livorno, Openbare school Taut Lui Fout, Openbare School Onverwacht, OS Munderbuiten, LBO Reeberg, and Mulo Onverwacht.
There is a shortage of classrooms in certain areas of the country. This was evident at the start of this school year, when not all students could be accommodated in local schools. As a result, children were placed in schools far from their home addresses where spots were available.
The ministry managed to place certain students in FIBOS schools, where spaces were available. The minister hopes that with the construction and renovation of these classrooms, shortages will no longer occur.
