Suriname aims to contribute to closer cooperation between the region and China during its chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The country will assume the chairmanship for six months in January 2027.
That ambition is set out in a speech prepared on Suriname’s behalf for the celebration of the 77th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, held on 23 September at the Torarica Hotel. According to the text, cooperation should above all deliver practical results for the region’s residents.
Suriname points to shared challenges, including climate change, food and energy security, and access to development financing. No country can address these issues alone, the message states.
The regional ambition comes in a year in which Suriname and China commemorate fifty years of diplomatic relations. Suriname also seeks to deepen the relationship bilaterally, including through trade, investment, education and technology. The country calls for better access for Surinamese products to the Chinese market and for investments that generate jobs and knowledge transfer.
