The United States is supporting Operation Gran Mati 2026 with medical supplies worth USD 45,000. During the operation, residents of the Marowijne district will receive free medical care, dental treatment and eye care.
The U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo reports that the donation was made available through the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). The operation is being carried out in cooperation with Suriname’s National Army, local government agencies and international partners.
Medical services will be provided at two locations in Marowijne. In Moengo, residents can visit the VOJ 1 Valdijckschool from August 19 to 22. In Albina, services will be offered at VOJ Albina from August 24 to 29. At both locations, the teams will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Operation Gran Mati provides medical care in areas where access to health services is limited. The name ‘Gran Mati’ means ‘great friend’. The program is led by the Surinamese armed forces, together with local government agencies and international partners, including the United States.
This year marks the sixth edition of Gran Mati. In previous years, the medical operation was carried out in Albina, Apoera, Langa Tabbetje, La Vigilantia, Powaka, Coronie and Nickerie, among other locations.
Through the operation, the organizations aim to increase access to basic health care for residents of remote areas.
