Boat operators who transport people across the Marowijne River between Suriname and French Guiana want clarity about their permits. According to the boat operators, they cooperate with inspections, registration and other safety measures, but the requested permits have not been issued.
The matter was discussed during a consultation with district commissioner Marvin Vijent. The boat operators had been invited to discuss their location along the waterfront in Albina and their experiences with the applicable rules and safety regulations.
According to the boat operators, in recent years they have cooperated with various initiatives to regulate the sector and register the vessels. Their boats are periodically inspected to ensure safety on the river. Despite this cooperation, the authorities have reportedly still not issued the required permits.
The boat operators say they are willing to meet all conditions. They want to take training courses to become certified, have their boats registered and inspected, and comply with the proposed safety measures.
During the consultation, it was agreed that the boat operators will reorganise and appoint a board. Afterwards, further work must be done together with the ministerie van Transport, Communicatie en Toerisme (Ministry of Transport, Communication and Tourism) and the Maritieme Autoriteit Suriname (Maritime Authority Suriname) on the regulation and interests of the sector.
The introduction of uniforms and badges was also discussed, so that registered boat operators can be recognised by passengers. In addition, training courses are being considered to improve services and the approach towards travellers.
