A 27-year-old driver has been taken into custody by the Traffic Police of the Central region after hitting two pedestrians on Nieuwe Grondweg in Wanica and subsequently fleeing the scene of the accident.
According to the preliminary police investigation, the driver, R.J., was driving his passenger car on Nieuwe Grondweg. He was traveling from the direction of Pandit Palten Tewarieweg toward Indira Gandhiweg. The pedestrians, J.S. and K.S., were walking in the opposite direction on the southern side of the road at that time.
Near building number 185A, the driver failed to veer sufficiently to the right and did not take the pedestrians on the road into account. As a result, both pedestrians were struck.
After the collision, the driver stopped his vehicle. An altercation then ensued between him and bystanders, after which he left the scene of the accident.
The police immediately launched an investigation and managed to track down both the vehicle and the driver. The suspect was found at a residence next to his home address. During an interview with him, police officers suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol.
R.J. was taken to the police station, where he was subjected to a sobriety test. He was then taken to the Emergency Room for a blood alcohol test.
One of the victims was also transported to the Emergency Room and remains in critical condition.
After the suspect had sobered up, he was arrested and taken into custody. His vehicle was seized by the police. According to the police, the driver possesses a valid Surinamese driver’s license but was unable to produce it. The investigation into this case is ongoing.
