Entrepreneurs ask EZOTI for clarity on application of import rules after containers were held

havenbeheer1 1 The VSB is urging clear and consistent import rules following delays caused by held containers, in order to protect manufacturing companies from additional costs and uncertainty.

The Vereniging Surinaams Bedrijfsleven (VSB) has again asked the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation (EZOTI) for clarity on import procedures. One reason is a container belonging to an affiliated entrepreneur that was previously detained and later released.

During a consultation with EZOTI on August 17, 2026, it was promised that the ministry would explain in writing why the container was initially held and on what grounds it was subsequently released.

The VSB emphasises that the issue goes beyond one individual case. According to the business organisation, importers must know in advance which conditions they must meet. Procedures, assessment criteria and applicable rules must also be applied transparently and consistently.

Delays affect manufacturing companies

According to the VSB, lack of clarity in import procedures can lead to delays, additional costs and uncertainty for businesses. Manufacturing companies in particular may be affected, as they depend on the timely import of raw materials, packaging materials and other production inputs.

The organisation therefore advocates for predictable trade and import policies and equal conditions for all entrepreneurs. Clear rules must prevent other companies from encountering similar problems in the future.

The VSB continues to press EZOTI for transparent procedures and clear communication on the application of import rules.
