Launch of Week van het Nederlands at The Community Hub

“Hereby, we want to draw more attention to the work of The Hub, which focuses, among other things, on promoting reading and language skills among young people and adults. Work is also being done on the development of creativity,” Chang says.

This year, 27 institutions are organising activities for the Week of Dutch, including The Community Hub. That is more than 50% more than last year. During the launch, on September 26, the participating organisations will have the opportunity to present their activities. They are themselves responsible for the content of their programmes, Chang writes to the Keynews editorial team.

The activities are not limited to the period around the official launch. Most participants have already been active throughout the year with language and reading activities. The Week of Dutch offers them an additional opportunity to bring these initiatives to public attention.

The Week of Dutch annually draws extra attention to the Dutch language. The initiative is aimed at everyone interested in Dutch, who wants to learn more about the language, loves languages or wants to contribute to improving language skills in Suriname. The 27 participating institutions are active in various locations across the country. These include Paramaribo, Lelydorp, Meerzorg, Uitkijk, Groningen, Nieuw-Nickerie, Wageningen, Matta, Botopasi and Nieuw-Aurora.

The Week of Dutch is explicitly not intended only for people who work professionally with the Dutch language, Chang writes. “Anyone who is interested in Dutch, curious about language or wants to contribute to better language skills in Suriname can take part.”

The initiative has been organised in Europe since 2015. Suriname has participated in the Week of Dutch since 2022. The launch on September 26 at The Community Hub is open to everyone.
