Mathoera hopes for VHP consensus list, but does not see election contest as a problem

Mathoera vhp Krishna Mathoera is seeking a consensus list within the VHP for the board elections, but is also open to a democratic contest between candidates. She emphasises strengthening and unity within the party.

VHP parliamentarian Krishna Mathoera hopes that the Vooruitstrevende Hervormingspartij will be able to present a consensus slate in the upcoming leadership elections. At the same time, she has no objection to different candidates and groups within the party taking part in a democratic electoral contest.

Mathoera spoke about this on the programme ‘Aan Tafel’ on Regio TV, where she was asked about developments surrounding the future leadership of the VHP.

The former Minister of Defence confirmed her preference for former Minister of Finance and Planning Armand Achaibersing. According to her, he demonstrated during his tenure as minister that he possesses administrative qualities and can achieve results.

Mathoera believes that the VHP needs reform, strengthening and greater mutual cohesion. She sees Achaibersing as a suitable candidate to lead this process.

During the discussion, various groups within the party and the political ambitions of VHP parliamentary group leader Asis Gajadien were also addressed.

Mathoera stressed that, in her view, it is positive when party members make their ambitions known. The final decision on the party leadership must, according to her, be made by the competent party structures.

She pointed out that the VHP has often worked with consensus slates in the past and expressed the hope that this will again be possible.

If no agreement is reached, Mathoera believes that candidates should be able to compete against one another through a democratic process.

For her, the main priority is that the party works together after the elections to further strengthen the organisation.

Regarding her own political ambitions, Mathoera reiterated that she remains available if the party structures call on her. She stressed that her main ambition is to serve Suriname.
