The new pumping installation at Sommelsdijkse Kreek has officially been commissioned. The installation is intended to improve the drainage of excess water and thereby reduce the risk of flooding in parts of Paramaribo.
Via Sommelsdijkse Kreek and the connected waterways, excess water from various areas is drained. This includes parts of the historic city centre and surrounding residential and tourist areas.
The installation was realised with financial support from Japan. Under a programme for economic and social development, the Japanese government made approximately US$2.7 million available for the replacement of key pumping and sluice infrastructure in Suriname.
According to the Japanese ambassador, the new pumping installation makes an important contribution to water management in Paramaribo. According to the diplomat, the project also underscores the long-standing cooperation between Suriname and Japan.
The installation is equipped with modern Japanese technology and industrial pumps. This is intended to strengthen the capacity to drain excess water.
Although the pumping installation is already operational, the work has not yet been fully completed. The associated building still needs to be further renovated and finished.
The project was carried out in cooperation with the governments of Suriname and Japan and various technical and implementing partners.
