NMA seeks temporary halt to gold mining after Saramacca River pollution

Oversight of the gold sector has become far more urgent following the pollution of the Saramacca River. The findings presented on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the presidential palace have made clear, according to the government and the National Environment Authority, that stricter controls are needed to prevent further environmental pollution. This concerns not only enforcement at individual companies, but also the structural protection of residents who depend on rivers and creeks in the interior for food, water and income.

NMA Director Vanuessa Gefferie said that chemical substances were found in water and fish from the Saramacca River. Heavy metals and cyanide were also detected in live fish. For this reason, the existing precautionary advisory remains in effect. Residents are advised not to consume fish from the affected area for the time being and not to use the river water. According to the authorities, the measure remains necessary as long as follow-up research does not provide sufficient certainty about safety.

The NMA also recommends clearly demarcating the affected area. According to Gefferie, part of the upper course of the river remains relatively undisturbed for now, as no activities are taking place there that directly affect the water. At the same time, pollution can spread through the current, meaning that activities elsewhere may still affect areas farther downstream.

Oversight of the gold sector must be tightened in high-risk areas

The many gold mining activities in the Villa Brazil, Gunsi and Maripaston areas are of particular concern to the environmental authority. The NMA has therefore advised temporarily suspending mining activities in these areas. Gefferie acknowledges that this presents a major challenge in practice, but says action is necessary when the safety of people and the environment cannot be guaranteed.

According to the NMA, a clearer distinction must be made between mining activities conducted in accordance with regulations and operations where rules are being violated. Licensed activities must be closely monitored, while violations must be addressed more quickly and more strictly. Oversight of the gold sector should therefore not only be reactive after an incident, but become a continuous part of environmental policy.

Environmental impact assessment must play a greater role

The NMA wants to evaluate the existing regulations for gold mining together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and tighten them where necessary. An important instrument in this regard is the environmental impact assessment. It must be clear beforehand what effects a mining activity may have on water, soil, nature and surrounding communities. It must also be established which measures are needed to prevent potential damage or limit it as much as possible.

The environmental authority previously developed guidelines for the use of so-called Gold Dressing Agents in the gold sector, precisely because the use, storage and disposal of such chemical agents can pose risks. According to the NMA, effective oversight of the gold sector therefore requires supervision of the entire process, from the start of an operation to the management of waste materials.

Continuous monitoring of water and soil needed

Without structural monitoring, the risk of new pollution remains.

In addition to permits and company inspections, the NMA advocates continuous monitoring of soil and water quality. According to Gefferie, the organization cannot carry out this task alone. Cooperation is needed among ministries, security services, laboratories, local communities and other relevant institutions. Only through regular measurements can changes in values or emerging risks be identified more quickly.

The NMA is still working on a further analysis of the results from the fish samples. An important part of this is communication with residents. According to the environmental authority, the technical research findings must be translated into information that is understandable and useful for communities. Residents must know what risks exist, which actions they should avoid for the time being and under what conditions existing warnings may later be adjusted.

Warning for pregnant women and young children remains in effect

President Jennifer Simons stressed that pregnant women and young children in particular should not consume fish from the river for the time being. Extra caution remains necessary for these groups as long as it is not yet fully clear what prolonged exposure to the detected substances could mean. The government intends to further inform communities about the research findings and the measures needed to limit the impact on their living environment.

The government is also looking at the situation around the Marowijne River. As it is a border river, possible pollution may affect communities on both sides. Simons therefore considers it important that clear agreements be made on protection, monitoring and responsibility. This makes oversight of the gold sector an issue that extends beyond one river or one affected area.

Saramacca River exposes broader problem in gold sector

The current situation is in line with earlier concerns about how gold mining in the interior is monitored. The government had already announced stricter controls in gold mining areas and indicated that companies failing to meet the requirements could be temporarily shut down.

The core of the announced approach is that oversight of the gold sector must be organized more structurally. At the same time, the government will have to take into account the economic importance of gold mining and the people who depend on the sector directly or indirectly.

Protection of communities central to further approach

For residents along the Saramacca River, clarity about the safety of fish and river water remains the main priority for now. The measures concerning gold mining will ultimately have to demonstrate whether the government is able to identify risks earlier and prevent pollution. The further development of oversight of the gold sector will therefore be closely watched, especially by communities directly affected by environmental pollution.
