The number of gold miners in the Moeroekreek area has, according to estimates, risen to around 8,000, while initially only 250 people had been anticipated.
The situation was discussed on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, during a meeting at the Ministry of Natural Resources (NH). Representatives of the traditional authority of Matawai, the government and Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. took part in the discussion. The Ministry of Regional Development (RO) was also represented.
Minister David Abiamofo of Natural Resources, who is currently also acting as Minister of Regional Development, indicated that the mining activities had at the time been made possible at the request of the traditional authority. The initiative was intended to create employment and contribute to the economic development of the Matawai community.
According to the minister, however, the situation has developed differently from what was originally agreed. The influx of thousands of gold miners has brought new challenges, including issues concerning security, environmental protection and oversight of the activities.
Traditional authority seeks registration and demarcation
During the meeting, captain Wilson Willems stressed that it is necessary to restore peace and order in the area. Granman Lesly Valentijn proposed clearly demarcating the mining area and registering all persons working there.
According to Valentijn, the livelihoods of the local population must be taken into account when measures are taken. Bringing order to the mining activities must not come at the expense of the economic opportunities of the Matawai community.
Rosebel willing to continue cooperation
Zijin Rosebel Gold Mines N.V. stated during the meeting that it is willing to continue its cooperation with Matawai until the end of 2026. However, the company attaches the condition that the agreements made are complied with.
In addition, it is being examined whether an alternative location can be made available for the mining activities. No further details have yet been disclosed about the possible location and the conditions under which the activities could take place there.
Minister Abiamofo stressed that the economic benefits of gold mining must actually reach the Matawai community. According to him, clear agreements, compliance with rules and cooperation between the parties involved are necessary to achieve this.
The government, the traditional authority and the other parties involved will meet again on Monday, November 9, 2026. The progress of the agreed action points will be discussed during that meeting.
