President Jennifer Simons called for greater unity, love and tolerance in Surinamese society during the National Divali Manifestation at Independence Square. In her address on Friday, 6 November 2026, the head of state stressed that Suriname’s cultural and religious diversity must not cause division, but should instead contribute to mutual connectedness and respect.

The manifestation was held in the run-up to Divali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, which is celebrated worldwide on Sunday, 8 November. In her address, Simons reflected on the deeper meaning of the festival, centred on the victory of light over darkness.

According to the president, Divali is not solely about lighting lamps, but above all about people’s attitude towards one another. She stressed that love, peace and tolerance must not be limited to festive occasions.

“What is the point of an illuminated home if our hearts remain closed to our fellow human beings?” the head of state told those present.

Simons called on society to leave behind hatred, indifference and mutual division. According to her, Divali offers an opportunity to reflect on how people treat one another and how they can contribute to a harmonious society.

Cultural diversity as strength

The president further stressed the importance of Suriname’s cultural and religious diversity. According to her, the various traditions, beliefs and backgrounds form an important part of the national identity.

“That diversity should not be an obstacle, but our greatest strength,” Simons stated.

She pointed out that the differing cultural and religious practices largely embody the same universal values, including love, peace, justice and respect for fellow human beings.

The head of state therefore believes it is important for Surinamese people to continue investing in mutual connectedness and understanding. According to her, the general interest must outweigh individual interests.

“We do not all have to be a great light. Everyone can bring light into the life of the other person standing beside him or her,” the president said.

Protection of shared heritage

In addition to her call for solidarity, Simons stressed the importance of preserving the shared cultural heritage. According to her, traditions and cultural values must be protected and passed on to future generations.

According to the president, preserving this heritage should contribute not only to protecting the national identity, but also to greater mutual understanding and appreciation among the different population groups.

“Do not let the light go out when the festival is over,” she told those present.

With this message, the head of state stressed that the values central to Divali must also be expressed in daily life after the festivities.

National Divali Manifestation

The National Divali Manifestation 2026 was organised by Culturele Unie Suriname (CUS). In addition to President Simons, parliamentary speaker Ashwin Adhin and a representative of the Indian embassy were among those present.

An important part of the annual celebration is the giant dia at Independence Square. The ceremonial lighting of this large traditional lamp is among the highlights of the manifestation.

Divali symbolises the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. In Suriname, in addition to its religious significance, the festival also holds an important place within the multicultural character of society.
