Arental home on Sastrodisomoweg in Lelydorp was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday afternoon. The fire is believed to have started at an extension cord in a bedroom. No one was injured.
The fire broke out at around 2.10 p.m. The 34-year-old tenant D.H., who is of Cuban origin, stated that he was asleep and woke up due to smoke. When he went to investigate, he saw that an extension cord next to a bed had caught fire. The man tried to extinguish the fire with water, but was unsuccessful. The mattress had meanwhile also caught fire, after which the flames spread rapidly.
D.H. ran outside to call for help. Neighbours living on the same plot also saw smoke coming from the house and discovered that a bedroom was on fire. They immediately alerted the Lelydorp fire brigade.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the house engulfed in flames. Despite firefighting efforts, the building and its entire contents could not be saved. The other homes on the plot were spared.
The Forensic Investigation Department is investigating the exact cause of the fire.
