The Surinaamse Wielren Unie (SWU) is taking concrete steps to bring the development of Surinamese youth to a more professional and international level. At the SWU’s special request, Steve McQueen, UCI Development Manager at the UCI Sattlelite Centre in Trinidad, conducted physical tests among young Surinamese cyclists.
This means that the young riders are given the opportunity to be tested and assessed under professional supervision using standardised physical measurements. Tests include: 6-second Peak Power (measuring maximum explosive power) and 30-second Maintenance Power/RPM (measuring the ability to sustain high effort and pedalling cadence for 30 seconds).
By professionally recording these data, the SWU gains insight into the development of Surinamese youth, allowing training and guidance to be increasingly tailored.
The cooperation with UCI development professionals gives Surinamese talents access to knowledge and expertise in line with international cycling. “We invest in talent, knowledge and professional guidance. We invest in the future of Surinamese cycling,” the SWU writes.
