The Youth Affairs Police on Wednesday, September 2, arrested 17-year-old D.L. on suspicion of defamation, libel and distributing pornographic images of an underage girl.
The case came to light after the father of the 16-year-old victim filed a report with Houttuin police in early August. The girl’s stepmother had allegedly received intimate images of her through an unknown telephone number.
According to the victim’s statement, she had been in a relationship with D.L. for about a year and a half. During a video call, the suspect allegedly made a screen recording of intimate images without her consent. The material was later forwarded to both the girl’s stepmother and her biological mother.
The images were also allegedly shared in a WhatsApp group of which the suspect and several others were members.
Following an investigation, D.L. was summoned to the Youth Affairs Police station. He denies distributing the images, but was arrested after being questioned.
After consultation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect was remanded in custody. Due to his minor age, he was placed in the boys’ detention facility at the Opa Doelie Transit Centre.
The Youth Affairs Police are continuing the investigation.
