Etienne Vaessen hopes to take the next step in his career after this season. The goalkeeper of FC Groningen told ESPN that he is open to both a transfer to a Dutch top club and an adventure abroad.
The 31-year-old Vaessen moved from RKC Waalwijk to FC Groningen in the summer of 2024 and has since developed into a regular presence between the posts for the Pride of the North. The goalkeeper has also started strongly this season.
Vaessen himself has noticed that he has made good progress in recent years. “Things have been going well in recent years. Things were already going well at RKC, which led to a great transfer to FC Groningen. I think I am continuing along that path.”
The goalkeeper hopes to continue his performances this season and take another step forward next summer.
“I hope to continue that development this season, and then I would like to make a great move to a top club next summer,” Vaessen says. “But I also aspire to make a great move abroad. I just have to continue on this path and then, as an experienced goalkeeper, good opportunities may still come my way.”
He does not rule out a move to a Dutch top club, although Vaessen realises that much depends on the needs of the clubs concerned.
“You never know. It also depends on what the Dutch top clubs are looking for. Ultimately, it is about what they are seeking and whether they see that profile in me. But I think I have an interesting profile for many clubs, both domestically and abroad. Especially because of my footballing qualities.”
