“The villages along the Marowijne River, particularly Bigi Ston, Sokeh and Lemtjiebon, have lacked clean drinking water for quite some time,” DNA member Geneviévre Jordan said in parliament on Tuesday.
Jordan said it is now the dry season and that sufficient clean drinking water should be available precisely during this period, but the people are deprived of it.
She demanded that the government come up with a solution as soon as possible. The parliamentarian especially called for the attention of Minister David Abiamofo of Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen and Minister Adelien Wijnerman of Financiën en Planning. “If there are receipts from the Ministry of NH concerning water delivery to the villages in Marowijne, they must be dealt with urgently by Financiën.”
She reminded the government that Suriname has signed various conventions and that these must be adhered to. “We must achieve the goals and ensure that everyone has access to clean drinking water.”
