With the driving of the first pile, a new phase began on Wednesday, September 9, in the expansion of the Dr. Jules Sedney Haven. A 140-metre quay is being constructed and is expected to be completed within twelve months.
The project started after the contract was signed on July 24. Preparatory work was then carried out to make the site ready for the pile-driving work.
The new quay will have a load-bearing capacity of 20 tonnes per square metre. Haukes Construction N.V. is responsible for implementation, while Hakrinbank N.V. is providing financing. N.V. Havenbeheer Suriname is acting as the client.
Responding to offshore developments
According to Havenbeheer, the investment is intended to further strengthen Suriname’s port infrastructure. The expansion responds to the growing need for logistics and maritime facilities, partly due to developments in the offshore oil and gas sector.
The new quay is intended to increase the operational capacity of the Dr. Jules Sedney Haven. The project is also expected to strengthen the port’s position as an important logistical link in Suriname’s economic development.
Cooperation with local companies
Havenbeheer says it deliberately chooses to work with local partners and suppliers in the development of modern port facilities. In doing so, the company aims to contribute to strengthening Surinamese knowledge, experience and implementation capacity.
According to the organisation, the growth of new economic sectors offers not only opportunities for infrastructure expansion, but also opportunities for local companies and professionals to actively participate in these developments.
General Manager Andreas Talea and his team expect swift implementation of the project and good cooperation among the parties involved.
