The Indian ambassador to Suriname, Subhash Prasad Gupta, paid a farewell visit to President Jennifer Simons on Monday, October 12. During the meeting at the office of the president, the diplomat reflected on his mission and cooperation between Suriname and India.
Gupta began his diplomatic mission in August 2024. According to the ambassador, several initiatives were implemented during that period to strengthen relations between the two countries. These include food aid, the transfer of defence equipment and uniforms, and development projects in Kwamalasamutu and Pusugurunu.
In addition, according to Gupta, four so-called quick-impact projects aimed at short-term results have been carried out. New projects are still under consideration.
The departing ambassador looks back on his stay in Suriname with satisfaction. “It was a very pleasant and enriching experience. I have always felt at home here,” Gupta said.
He sees opportunities to further expand cooperation in the areas of agriculture, agro-industry, technology and digitalisation. According to the diplomat, Suriname can benefit from Indian experience in the processing of agricultural products and modern digital applications. Surinamese are already being offered training in advanced technology.
Gupta also emphasised the importance of the historical and cultural ties between the two countries. According to him, the Indian diaspora in Suriname forms an important connecting link and one of the pillars of the bilateral relationship.
The ambassador called on the Surinamese government and population to further strengthen friendship with India. He expects that deeper cooperation can provide long-term benefits to both societies.
