The tax authority’s debt settlement project has so far generated more than SRD 1.2 billion. This puts the proceeds at more than double the estimated SRD 527.5 million. Minister Adelien Wijnerman of Finance and Planning announced the figures during the consideration of debt collection legislation in De Nationale Assemblée (Suriname’s parliament).
According to Wijnerman, the provisional proceeds amount to SRD 1,249,181,686. The original estimate of SRD 527,547,779 assumed that 30 percent of outstanding tax debts covered by the scheme would be collected.
The settlement scheme started in September 2025 and was initially to run for six months. The project concerned the tax years 2020 through 2023. In January 2026, the government decided to extend its duration by three months and also bring the 2024 tax year under the scheme.
The minister stressed that the final result has yet to be determined. Payment arrangements are still ongoing, and the tax authority is processing objections and applications submitted shortly before the scheme expired.
Once these cases have been completed, a final financial settlement and an evaluation of the debt settlement project will follow.
Wijnerman provided the information during the consideration of the draft Debt Collection Act and the draft Costs Act for Tax Debt Collection. Parliamentary consideration of the tax laws will continue on Tuesday.
