The Holiday Employment Project 2026 of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports (JOS) started on Monday, August 31. Nationwide, around 1,300 young people will have the opportunity to gain paid work experience.
The project is part of the Krin Kondre campaign. In Wanica, more than 130 young people began work under the supervision of staff from the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO). Work has also started in Saramacca, Coronie and Commewijne, with a total of around 300 participants.
For ten days, the young people will, among other things, clear litter along streets and around schools. Prior to the work, they attended a two-day teach-in. Attention was paid to safety, discipline, cooperation and patriotism.
According to Milton Tuart, deputy director of Youth Centres at JOS, the project is an investment in the future. The ministry wants young people not only to gain work experience, but also to make them aware of their responsibility towards society and their living environment.
From the second week of September, fifty young people with special needs will also be given the opportunity to gain work experience at social institutions. The work will be adapted to their capabilities.
OWRO Minister Stephen Tsang emphasises that the project gives young people the opportunity to earn some extra money while at the same time developing greater awareness of the importance of a clean environment.
According to the minister, a clean living environment is a shared responsibility. He believes that young people should learn at an early age to contribute themselves to the cleanliness of the environment in which they live, work and study.
