The police arrested 19-year-old M.T. on Monday, 31 August, following a fight on Floris Zwakkestraat in the Flora ressort. During the incident, 36-year-old V.D. sustained an injury to his forehead.
Officers from the Flora police station went to the location after receiving a report of a fight. Preliminary investigation shows that two groups had become involved in a confrontation.
M.T. stated that he was not involved in the original conflict, but was suddenly attacked by a group of around ten men. According to his statement, he defended himself with a sharp object. V.D. sustained an injury to his forehead in the process.
The victim was conscious and was transported by ambulance to the Emergency Department of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo for medical treatment.
Police arrested M.T. at the scene and took him to the police station for questioning. Following consultation with the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), he was remanded in custody pending the investigation.
