The historic Palmentuin in Paramaribo is undergoing a thorough renovation to make the site attractive, safe and accessible to the public again. The work is being carried out under the Paramaribo Urban Rehabilitation Program (PURP I). The garden has been temporarily closed since September 1, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen in February 2027.

Director Xiomara Simons of the Directoraat Cultuur has told the Communicatie Dienst Suriname (CDS) that the renovation is necessary to restore the historic garden to its former glory. According to her, there has long been a need for a thorough approach to the site.

“The Palmentuin should have been addressed much earlier. Society called for attention to it, and it was necessary to look at how we could rehabilitate the garden and make it accessible again,” Simons said.

Walking paths, lighting and drainage to be addressed

The renovation work focuses on several components of the Palmentuin. The drainage system and lighting will be improved. Damaged benches and walking paths will also be repaired. In addition, attention will be paid to the safety and accessibility of the site.

The condition of the characteristic palm trees has also been examined. A team from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) previously carried out an assessment. This established which trees could be retained and which had to be removed. Healthy palm trees were preserved, while dead specimens were removed.

Renovation financed with IDB loan

The work is being carried out through PURP I, under the responsibility of the Directoraat Cultuur. Funding is provided through resources from a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

According to Simons, the start of the work was delayed due to various activities previously held at the location. These included events related to Heritage Month, the Day of the Indigenous Peoples and the commemoration of Javanese Immigration.

Historic character must be preserved

Preserving the historical value of the Palmentuin is central to the rehabilitation. For this purpose, a management and maintenance plan drawn up and approved in 2024 is being used. This plan serves as an important guideline for the work and is in line with UNESCO guidelines.

After the planned reopening in February 2027, the Palmentuin must again provide space for social, cultural and tourism activities. The use of the garden will be subject to clear rules to prevent damage and deterioration of the site.

Simons stresses that not only the government, but also society is responsible for the sustainable preservation of this historic location.

“The government and society are important stakeholders. Together, we must ensure that the garden is preserved for future generations,” the director said.

The renovation is intended to make the Palmentuin an attractive meeting place once again for residents and visitors to Paramaribo.
