“There are many complaints about the functioning of the police in Nickerie,” DNA member Rabin Parmessar recently said in parliament. “What are the police doing in Nickerie?” he bluntly asked the government.
He claimed that all kinds of illegal goods enter the country from Guyana via Nickerie and that the police are not taking action. “How is it possible that harmful goods are brought into Suriname from Guyana via Nickerie?” He is pleased that there is a checkpoint in Coronie, where proper inspection work is being carried out. “But what are the officers in Nickerie doing?” he asked again.
According to him, there are also many complaints about the misconduct of officers in the district. They increasingly turn a blind eye and even provide services for illegal fishing. He finds what is happening in Nickerie very serious.
“We want to know clearly how it is possible that so many illegal goods enter the country via Nickerie.” What are the officers in Nickerie doing? “It is terrible what is happening there,” said the NDP parliamentary group leader.
