Rudy Drielinger and Radjinderkoemar Mathoera on Tuesday, September 8, submitted a petition to De Nationale Assemblée (DNA, Suriname’s parliament). They are asking parliament to pay attention to the financial situation of citizens, rising living costs and security in society.
The petitioners also expressed concerns about the salary increase for civil servants announced by President Jennifer Simons. They want parliament to take into account the financial circumstances faced by many citizens in the further handling of this matter.
In addition, Drielinger and Mathoera question the intention to also make representatives eligible for a salary increase. According to them, DNA members already receive a substantial income and a further increase is therefore not justified.
With the petition, the submitters want the parliament to pay attention to citizens’ purchasing power, the rising cost of living and the security situation in the country.
Acting clerk Dino Oedit received the petition on behalf of the DNA chairperson and heard the petitioners. He pledged to forward the issues raised to parliament.
